The Cornell University College of Industrial and Labor Relations issued the following news release:

Jack Goncalo, Assistant Professor, Department of Organizational Behavior, will receive the best paper award from the Academy of Management Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division for his work "When Confidence Comes Too Soon: Collective Efficacy, Conflict and Group Performance Over Time."

Goncalo will accept the award at the academy's annual meeting this summer. The Academy of Management is the world's largest and oldest scholarly management association.

The award-winning research detailed results from a study involving classroom project teams and focusing on group dynamics over time. A great deal of existing research has shown that confident groups set more challenging goals, are more persistent, and are more likely to succeed than groups who are not confident in their abilities.

By observing how group confidence develops over time, however, Professor Goncalo found that when groups develop a sense of confidence too early they are actually more likely to eventually experience failure. This finding contradicts the generally accepted idea that collective efficacy is always beneficial for group performance.
