* Northwest Strategies has hired Derek McNeill as creative director. McNeill takes over management of the seven-person NWS creative team, which includes graphic design, advertising and print production, broadcast production and Web design and development.
After a career as an Air Force photographer, McNeill completed his bachelor's degree in advertising at the University of Alaska and got his start in advertising as an art director for The Nerland Agency.
After graduating in 1999, he moved to Seattle and honed his skills in advertising, design and photography, as well as teaching design at The Northwest College of Art. While in Seattle, he worked with such notable agencies as Cole and Weber, Wongdoody and Porter Novelli and on national brands such as Tree Top, Corona, Nike and Microsoft; he also developed new tech brands like drugstore.com and Icebreaker mobile software.
* Alex Hills has been elected Engineer of the Year by the Alaska Engineering Societies. The award was made "for outstanding professional leadership, technical excellence and dedicated community service." The award is made annually based on nominations from engineering societies in Alaska.
Hills has lived in Alaska since 1970, and he has lectured and consulted in countries around the world. He heads Alex Hills Associates, a consulting firm based in Palmer, and holds faculty appointments as Distinguished Service Professor at Carnegie Mellon University and Profesor Extraordinario at the Universidad Austral de Chile.
* ARECA Insurance Exchange promoted Amy Paxson to administrative assistant, loss control and underwriting. Paxson is responsible for providing administrative and technical support to the director of loss control and the underwriter. Paxson also prepares reports for the insurance company and is responsible for administering the safety awards program.
* Arctic Slope Regional Corp. has promoted Tara MacLean Sweeney to vice president of external affairs. Sweeney has held a variety of positions within ASRC during the past 10 years, most recently as director of government affairs representing ASRC in Washington, D.C. In her new role, Sweeney will manage the corporation's government affairs, community and corporate charitable contributions, public relations and corporate-wide communications. Sweeney, an ASRC shareholder from Barrow, received a bachelor of science degree in Labor Relations from Cornell University.
* Alaska Hand Rehabilitation LLC hired therapist Cami Solari. She will work full time performing rehabilitation of the shoulder, arm and hand. Originally from Reno, Nev., Solari moved to Alaska in 2005. She received her master's degree in occupational therapy from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
