Allen Speiser November 7, 2007

Allen Speiser, 83, formerly of Brooklyn, died Wednesday at Iroquois Nursing Home. He had been a resident of Syracuse for over 40 years. Allen received a certificate in industrial and interior design from Cooper Union and then continued his education at NYU, earning a B.S. in vocational rehabilitation and psychology, cum laude, a master's degree, and a Ph.D. with honors. In 1964 he founded Consolidated Industries, a vocational rehabilitation facility of which he was the executive director until his retirement in 1989. Allen was also an adjunct professor at Cornell University in the School of International Labor Relations. Through the years, Dr. Speiser was a respected and sought after advisor, lecturer, grant writer and consultant in the field of rehabilitation to the private and public sectors. Among his many awards were the Mayor's Award of Syracuse in 1985 and the Adrian Levy Award from the NY State Association of Rehabilitation Agencies.

Dr. Speiser was a member of many prestigious organizations and served them with pride and humility. In his own words, his greatest achievement was "having the opportunity of serving the disabled through vocational rehabilitation."

Allen was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Lottie Speiser; his sister, June Marilyn Lampert; and his first wife, Sherry Kammin Speiser, who died in 1986. Survived by his wife, Ruth Weinberg Speiser; his daughter, Tina Lisa (Joseph C. Jr.) Heinzmann; his grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Heinzmann; his stepsons, Jonathan (Lyn Paul) Weinberg, Stuart (Sherry) Weinberg and Howard (Abbie Ellicott) Weinberg; his stepgrandchildren, Douglas, Lee, Mathew, Bradley, Benjamin, Andrew, Jessica and Kirstyn; his niece, Dana Lampert Cohen; his nephew, Philip Lampert; and two grandnephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Congregation Beth Sholom- Chevra Shas.

Friends may visit with the family at the synagogue, 18 Patsy Lane, DeWitt, from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Beth Sholom section of Oakwood Cemetery.
