PARAMUS -- Bergen Community College has narrowed its presidential search to three finalists, including the president of the County College of Morris.
The Morris president, Edward J. Yaw, and the other finalists, G. Jeremiah Ryan and Barbara A. Viniar, are scheduled to visit BCC for interviews, the college said Wednesday. Each of the finalists has extensive background in community colleges.
Ryan has been the senior vice president of the Alman Group in Westfield since 2006. From 2000 to 2006 he was president and chief executive officer of Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg.
He also served as president and chief executive officer of Quincy College in Massachusetts from 1996 to 2000.
Ryan received a bachelor's degree from Hamilton College, a master's from Stanford University, a master's from the University at Albany, State University of New York; and a doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University.
Viniar has been the executive director of the Institute for Community College Development at Cornell University since 2003. She was the president of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Mass., from 1994 to 2003. She also served in a number of administrative jobs at Rockland Community College in New York from 1977 to 1994.
Viniar received a bachelor's degree and a master's from Lehman College, City University of New York, and a doctorate in education from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Yaw has been the president of the County College of Morris in Randolph since 1986, and was the school's dean of academic affairs for six years before becoming president.
He also served in a number of academic capacities at Adelphi University in New York from 1969 to 1980.
Yaw received a bachelor's degree from SUNY Binghamton, a master's from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and a doctorate in education from Columbia University.
Bergen has more than 14,000 students enrolled in degree and certificate programs as compared with 8,000 for the college in Morris. Bergen also serves more than 10,000 students enrolled in non-credit, professional courses. Bergen and Camden county colleges are the largest in the state.
Current college President Judith K. Winn announced her retirement after 10 years at the helm and will stay on during a year's sabbatical ? at her annual salary of $186,000 ? to work with the college's foundation and help the new president's transition.
