Kaye Scholer Partner To Receive Cornell University ILR School's 2007 Groat Award For Career Accomplishments

NEW YORK, Thursday, March 29, 2007 – LawFuel - Top Law News - Jay W. Waks, Partner in the Litigation Department of the New York office and long-time Chair of Kaye Scholer LLP’s Employment & Labor Law practice, is receiving from Cornell University its ILR School’s 2007 Judge William B. Groat Award on March 29, 2007. The Groat award will be presented by ILR School Dean Harry C. Katz at a banquet celebration at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City.


The Judge William B. Groat Alumni Award has been awarded annually since 1971 to honor distinguished graduates who have demonstrated outstanding service and support to the School. It recognizes those whose career accomplishments have been primarily within the field of labor and employment relations.

Mr. Waks is a graduate of Cornell’s ILR School (‘68) and Cornell’s Law School (‘71), a fellow of both the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and the American Bar Association Foundation, a director of the Federal Bar Foundation and executive committee member of the Federal Bar Council, and an elected member of the American Law Institute (ALI) and advisor to ALI’s Restatement of the Law, Third - Employment Law. Additionally, Mr. Waks serves on the Executive and Diversity Committees of the CPR International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution and as chair of CPR’s Employment Disputes Committee for over 15 years. He is chair of the Cornell University Council, the first ILR School alumnus to serve in that capacity, and is a member of the ILR School Advisory Council as well as chair of the Cornell Law School Advisory Council. Mr. Waks and his wife have established The Waks Family Fund for International Education and Research at the ILR School and Jay W. and Harriet S. Waks Scholarship at the Law School. He and his wife delight in the accomplishments of the diverse student recipients of both funds.

Mr. Waks has practiced labor and employment law for 34 years, all at Kaye Scholer. He is respected for his defense of US and international companies in labor matters and employment rights cases including class/collective actions, discrimination, restrictive covenant/forfeiture and retaliation cases. He also is known for his successes in high profile public sector cases. He is a recognized leader in arbitration and alternatives to litigation, assisting companies in application of dispute resolution programs.
