USeminole resident Joshua Lynn Root has joined the Peace Corps. and will leave for Cambodia on Jan. 29 to teach English to high school-age students.

He also will develop after-school programs and assist the community in other ways.

Root earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University in December. He previously worked as a union organizer in western Massachusetts.

During the first three months of his service, Root, son of Robert Root of Seminole, will live with a host family in Cambodia to become immersed in the country's language and culture.

He will serve two years in his host community, living at the same level as the local people. After the Peace Corps, he hopes to attend law school and join the Navy.

Health walk, wellness expo set for Jan. 25

Join members of the Seminole Walking Club for a morning stroll at Seminole Recreation's second annual "Seminole on the Move" health walk. The fun walk will serve as a kickoff for the sixth annual "Fit Over 50" Health and Wellness Expo, which will open immediately after the walk inside the Recreation Center. Organizers say the walk will be a light activity and an opportunity for walkers to meet new people and exercise.

The expo will focus on the health and wellness of seniors with seminars, live entertainment, a healthy snack buffet, vendor expo, hands-on fitness/wellness demonstrations, and giveaways and raffles. It is free and open to the public.

What: Second annual "Seminole on the Move" health walk and "Fit over 50" Health and Wellness Expo.

When: The walk starts at 9 a.m.; the expo is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 25.

Mall offers activities for kids next Saturday

Seminole Mall will offer a special kid's day next Saturday. Activities will include fun crafts for children and face painting in the mall's food court area.

Parents can hang out and take advantage of the mall's free WiFi. The children's activities are free.

When: Noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 27.

Where: Seminole Mall, Park Boulevard between 113th Street and Seminole Boulevard.

Babies can compete in Diaper Derby

Proud parents of exceptional babies (and aren't they all?) should plan to attend Seminole's ninth annual Diaper Derby.

Registration is $5 per baby, and a Seminole recreation card is not required to participate. Babies will compete for prizes in two age categories for Cutest Smile, Perkiest Personality, Chubbiest Cheeks and Parent Look-a-Like. Call the recreation center to RSVP.

When: Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. for newborns to 9 months old and 10:30 a.m. to noon for babies 10- to 18 months old.

Trip allows for stroll in jungle landscape

Visit Sarasota Jungle Gardens with Seminole Recreation. Stroll along a trail that wanders through an ever-changing landscape of cool, under-story jungle growth around open pond shorelines.

Shows throughout the day include: the Birds of Prey exhibit, Critters and Things interactive show and Reptile Encounter.

The fee is $27 per person for travel and admission to the Gardens. Lunch at a local restaurant is not included. You must have a recreation card to participate.

When: 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday. The group will depart from the Seminole recreation complex, 9100 113th St. N., at 8:45 a.m. and should return by 3 p.m.
