Samuel Bacharach is the McKelvey-Grant Professor of Labor Management and is Director of ILR's New York City based Institute for Workplace Studies as well as the Director of the Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies. He is also the director of the New York City-based Master of Professional Studies, Visiting Professor, Ben Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel, and Visiting Professor, École Nationale des Ponts Chausêes, MBA, Paris. He received his BS in economics from NYU. His MS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

He recently headed a study of work conditions and emotional health among NYC firefighters and fire officers, "On the Front Line: The Work of First Responders in a Post 9/11 World." As a follow-up to this study, in 2004, he has just begun a study in collaboration with the Transport Workers Union of New York City, examining the work conditions and emotional well being of 2000 subway and bus operators. He also headed a five-year effort studying blue-collar work conditions and is now leading a follow-up five-year study of the emotional well being of blue-collar workers in retirement. Much of Professor Bacharach's work is funded through grants from the National Institutes of Health.

For the past five years he has been involved in the study of change in organizations with a special emphasis on issues of creativity, dialogue and politics. He has an interest in the implication of long-distance learning technology for pedagogy. He has collaborated with eCornell in developing a 4-course certificate program in proactive leadership. In particular he is concerned with the use of long distance technology for enhancing undergraduate, graduate and executive education. He joined the ILR. faculty in 1974 and in the past he has served as the chairman of the Department of Organizational Behavior.
