HEADLINE: Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead to Host 35th Annual Scholarship Dinner

Hofstra University issued the following news release:

The 35th Annual Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Dinner, which raises money to help Village of Hempstead students attend Hofstra University, will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Dining Room of the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus.

The Scholarship Dinner committee also presents the Unispan Award to individuals or organizations for their community work. The award, named for the original pedestrian bridge over Hempstead Turnpike that unites Hofstra's north and south campuses, symbolizes the close ties between the University and the Village of Hempstead. This year's Unispan Award recipients are Richard M. Bivone, Ligia Estrada, Aaron Jones, Regina Lattimore, Harry Ransom and the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc.

Richard M. Bivone is president of RMB Development Consultants, RMB Drafting Services Inc, and Electrical Inspectors, Inc. He is immediate past president of the Nassau County Chambers of Commerce.

He was a firefighter with Elmont Fire Department Truck 2, where he attained the rank of captain, and a fire dispatcher in the North Bellmore Fire District. He later joined the FDNY with Engine 222 in Bedford Stuyvesant as an aide in the 37th Battalion, then became the division aide in the 15th Division and a safety battalion technician. In 1992 he was awarded a Class B Meritorious Medal for saving the life of a transit worker at a construction site. Mr. Bivone retired from the FDNY in 2000.

His extensive community service includes first vice president of the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations (CEMCO), board member of the Nassau County Jail Advisory Committee, first vice chairman of the Nassau County Fire Fighter Museum, board member of the Nassau County Law Enforcement Exploring Advisory Board, New York City Congestion Fee Commissioner, board member of Vision Long Island, Lighthouse Steering Committee and Nassau Coliseum Renovation. Mr. Bivone served on the Hofstra University's Educate '08 community advisory committee and has also volunteered his time to the steering committee for the Lighthouse Project, which aims to redevelop the Nassau Coliseum and 77 surrounding acres.

He has lived in East Meadow with his wife Karen since 1984. They have two children, David and Amanda. He is a graduate from Delhi University and New York Institute of Technology in the field of architecture.

Ligia Estrada is vice president of Amerifirst Mortgage Corp. A talented and successful mortgage banker, Ms. Estrada, has been actively involved in the community. She assists other women through the Healthy Start Project at EOC of Nassau County. She initiated the Coats for Families Project in Hempstead through which more than 2,000 coats were distributed to needy families. She is also highly committed in the struggle of Hispanic youth at risk.

When Central American immigrants were given an opportunity to apply for United States citizenship, Ms. Estrada donated space for the committee to meet and also volunteered her services to assist with the process. She secured space for the Salvadorian Consulate to assist Salvadorian residents in obtaining updated passports.

When Hurricane Mitch struck Central America in 1998, she collected and sent food, clothing, and medicine to the affected countries. When earthquakes devastated El Salvador, Ms. Estrada and a group of other committed individuals organized a relief campaign through radio-thons.

Aaron Jones is president and CEO of Jones Marketing & Management, LLC (JMM), a full-service marketing firm specializing in sports, entertainment and corporate initiatives that he founded in 2002. Under his leadership, JMM generated more than $5 million in client revenue and brand value for a high profile list of clients including Mercedes Benz, AXA Financial, WNBA Players Association, The Jordan Brand, Prince, Jay-Z and many others.

The sports and entertainment industry veteran is now team president of The New York Titans, one of 12 professional indoor lacrosse franchises in the National Lacrosse League. He reports directly to the team's owners and oversees all aspects of the lacrosse and business operations. He was previously team president for the National Basketball Development League's franchise in Greenville, S.C. He spent 10 years with the National Football League and five with the NFL Players Association as assistant vice president of Players Inc., the marketing company for the NFL player's union.

A Hempstead native and 1983 graduate of Hempstead High School, Mr. Jones received a Bachelor of Science degree at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations and his Masters of Science from the University of Massachusetts. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation, is chairman of the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation's Diversity Committee and is a member of the Cornell University Athletic Alumni Advisory Committee. He also serves on the board of the National Urban League.

Mr. Jones lives with his wife and daughter in New York City.

Regina Lattimore is assistant to the chief of the Village of Hempstead Police Department. A 22-year department employee, she started as a part-time Neighborhood Aide. She is currently spear-heading a new program for Chief Joseph Wing called Hempstead/Nassau Against Gun Violence. Ms. Lattimore is a trustee and a member of the Hospitality Ministry of the Faith Baptist Church.

A lifelong resident of the Village of Hempstead, as a youth she participated in many community activities such as 4H Club, Girl Scouts, church, student government, YMCA, Hempstead schools and community sports programs. She graduated from Hempstead High School in 1976.

Ms. Lattimore served three terms on the Hempstead School Board, is a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, past member of the Time Out Club Inc./Percy Jackson Youth Center, past member of NAACP, former volunteer girls basketball and cheerleading coach for community programs, member of PTA/PTO in the school district, a graduate from the Hempstead Civilian Police Academy, honorary member of the Hempstead PAL and member of the Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead committee.

She shares a home in Hempstead with her mother and two of her three children and is the proud grandparent of three.

Harry Ransom is chief executive officer of the Greater Hempstead housing Development Fund Corporation. A thirty-eight year resident of the Village of Hempstead, he was born and raised in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He received his B.S. degree from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He continued his studies through the University of Southern California European Campus. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970.

From 1994-1995, Mr. Ransom served as commander of the Nassau County American Legion. He is a member of Nassau Voiture 803 40/8, the Honor Society of the American Legion, and was chair of the Education & Scholarship Committee for the Nassau County American Legion, which presents a $1,000 scholarship to a Nassau County student with the highest academic credentials.

Retired from 3M Company after 24 years in sales, Mr. Ransom recently served as the executive director of human relations for Hempstead Village under former Mayor James Garner. Mr. Ransom was also chief executive officer of the Greater Hempstead Housing Development Fund Corporation.

The Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc. (EOC) is a private, not-for-profit agency devoted to facilitating and strengthening basic social relationships between individuals, families and social organizations in Nassau County. Its mission is to provide low-income and minority individuals in Nassau County the opportunity for education, training, employment, health care and decent housing. Targeting the poor, predominately black and Latino residents, EOC has earned the reputation of providing innovative leadership and excellent service with regards to improving the quality of life available to its target populations.
