Day-care demand surges at many Buffalo centers

It has been just over a year since the Joan A. Male Family Support Center completed an expansion of its on-site Raggedy Ann & Andy Comprehensive Child Care Center, moving from a capacity of 44 children to 124.

The expansion at the nonprofit Dingens Street site came just two months before a regional report on the demand for child-care options in the downtown area. The report, Buffalo Child Care Means Business, was a collaborative effort by several area groups.

Raggedy Ann & Andy now serves 53 children and hopes to add more next year with a new Universal Pre-Kindergarten program through the Buffalo Public Schools. The organization has been working with Success by Six to prepare for national certification through the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Day-care director Terrilyn Summers says she knows the demand is out there and she is working hard to spread the word.
