Hanover - The 4-H horse clubs of Hanover, Henrico and King William counties are combining for an information and demonstration session Thursday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Horse Center at Pole Green Park in Hanover. Mounted demonstrations will showcase five equestrian styles: dressage, combined training, hunter/jumper, reining and speed events. Refreshments will be available. Henrico - Reta R. Busher, Henrico County's director of finance, will become the Virginia Department of Transportation's chief financial officer. Busher, a certified public accountant, brings 27 years of corporate and local government financial experience to VDOT, which has a $4 billion annual budget. She joined Henrico in 1993 as director of management and budget. Before Henrico, Busher worked for Roanoke County for nine years and as an accountant with Peat Marwick in Roanoke. The Eastern Shore native holds a business degree from the College of William and Mary.

Richmond - The Richmond City Health District will conduct an all-day school immunization clinic on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Public Health Clinic at 500 N. 10th St. All school-required immunizations will be available to Richmond children. Parents must accompany children and must bring a copy of each child's immunization record. A Tdap booster shot is now required for any youth entering the sixth grade, if at least five years have passed since his or her last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine. In addition to the special clinic Friday, the Richmond Public Health Clinic provides walk-in immunization services 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For details, call 646-6850.

Hanover - Hanover County Animal Control warns residents that leaving pets in vehicles on sunny days - even for a few minutes - can kill them. People who see an animal in a car showing any sign of heat stress are urged to call 911 immediately. Hanover County Animal Control and other law-enforcement agencies will be patrolling certain areas, including parking lots, looking for animals that may be in heat distress because of being left in vehicles. If an animal dies as a result of being left in a vehicle, the owner can be charged with felony cruelty to animals, punishable by jail time.

AROUND THE STATE

Harrisonburg - With 3,900 students accepted, James Madison University's freshman class is set to be the school's largest, topping last year's 3,732. JMU received 13,167 applications from Virginia residents, more than any other public institution in the state. Seventy-one percent listed a Virginia locality as their hometown. The top seven localities represented are Virginia Beach, Richmond, Midlothian, Fairfax County, Fredericksburg, Sterling and Alexandria.

Chase City - "A Night to Remember" fundraising concert will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. in Chase City's Robert E. Lee Auditorium, said Joseph Epps, a spokesman for the program. Mezzo-soprano Marjorie Wharton and pianist and accompanist Russell Wilson will be featured, Epps said. The concert is a fundraiser for Chase City's MacCallum More Museum & Gardens.

Lexington - Joseph E. Grasso, vice president for administration at Washington and Lee University, has announced he is leaving the school. Grasso, who grew up in the Syracuse-Ithaca area of New York, is joining Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations as dean for finance and administration.
