The City University of New York's Borough of Manhattan Community College issued the following news release:

In Celebration of Women's HerStory Month, BMCC welcomes New York City Council Member Darlene Mealy. On Wednesday, March 14, BMCC alumna, the Honorable Darlene Mealy, will share her personal story of running for public office and winning a New York City Council seat in the 41st District of Brooklyn.

As part of the Women's HerStory Month, City Council Member Mealy will have a candid conversation about her experience on the road to City Hall with students and other members of the BMCC community. The workshop will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 on our main campus, 199 Chambers Street in Room S370.

Darlene Mealy took office as the Council Member in Brooklyn's 41st District in January 2006. Council Member Mealy was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Brooklyn's 41st District, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area. She attended P.S. 28, J.H.S 271 and George W. Wingate High School. She later studied at The Borough of Manhattan Community College and Cornell for Labor Women Studies.

Mealy is a young grass roots' leader from Bedford-Stuyvesant committed to bringing about a positive change in her community. She serves as an outspoken Community leader responding to the needs of the people in her community with honor and integrity. Her perseverance is a strength that she utilizes to get positive results.

Prior to her election to the council, Mealy was employed at the New York City Transit Authority for 17 years, in the Department of Buses Technical Services Division; Member of Christ Memorial Church, Pastor Flora L. H. Grant under the Pilgrim Church, Chief Prelate Arch Bishop Roy E. Brown; Founder/President of a multiple block association organization known as the Fulton Street/Atlantic Avenue/Ralph Avenue/Rochester Avenue F.A.R.R. Community Association, Inc.; National Delegate for the Reverend Al Sharpton for President; Board Member Neighborhood Housing Services; 81st Precinct Community Council's Former Secretary; Unity Democratic Club's Former Secretary.
