Apr. 5--GREENVILLE -- David J. Paterson has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Bowater, effective May 1, the company announced Tuesday.
He succeeds Arnold M. Nemirow, who is retiring as CEO but will remain as nonexecutive chairman until later this year.
Since 2003, Paterson has been executive vice president of Georgia-Pacific, in charge of its Building Products Division.
Paterson, 51, has a bachelor's degree from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Bowater plant in Catawba is one of York County's top employers.
The Greenville-based company is a leading producer of newsprint, coated mechanical and specialty papers.
