* George "Skip" Helfrich has been named executive director and Amy Freiermuth has been named assistant director of Leadership Niagara, a countywide nonprofit organization that involves community representatives in a yearlong leadership training program, announced Jill A. Spira, chairwoman of the organization's Board of Directors. Helfrich graduated from the Leadership Niagara program in 1989 and Freiermuth in 2002.
Both have been involved with the organization since their participation in the program, most recently serving in interim positions.
* Cynthia Bootz, of the Town of Niagara, has been promoted to vice president of human resources at Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara. Bootz has been with the agency since 1983, serving first with Rides Unlimited of Niagara, a former subsidiary of Opportunities Unlimited. Her most recent position was as human resource director for Opportunities Unlimited.
Bootz has an associate's degree in business administration from Niagara County Community College and has completed extensive coursework through the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, in conjunction with the Society for Human Resource Management.
She and her husband, Michael, are the parents of three children.
For 50 years, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara has provided opportunities for people with mental retardation or developmental disabilities.
* Three Niagara University students from the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management have been awarded $1,000 scholarships from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Foundation.
Melissa Neild of Kenmore, Natlaka Gluszko of Rochester and Elizabeth Kozlowski of Niagara Falls will receive the award in two equal installments per academic year.
