CHAPEL HILL - Robert E. Doherty died peacefully February 19, 2005, in the UNC Hospital from pulmonary fibrosis.
Though born in Sanborn, Wis., Bob spent his formative years in Trout Lake, Wash. After serving in the United States Army, 11th Airborne Division, during WWII, he completed his undergraduate education at Oregon State University, then earned a master's and doctorate in history from Columbia University.
During his professional career, he taught at the State University of New York at Oneonta and at the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. In addition to his professional duties at Cornell, he served as associate dean, acting dean, and ultimately dean of the college. He also did arbitration and mediation for the New York State Public Employee Relations Board. In 1989 Bob began his retirement in Chapel Hill.
Bob loved life, good books, and lively debate. It was said of him that while some saw humor in nothing, Bob saw it in everything.
Survivors include wife, Mary Jo Doherty, of Chapel Hill; daughters, Dr. Molly W. Anderson, of San Miguel d'Allende, Mexico, and Tracy A. Doherty, of Eugene, Ore.; granddaughter, Ruth Doherty-Kirkpatrick, of Eugene, Ore.; stepson, Timothy Shaaff, wife, Susan Tenney, children, Ben Schaaff and Mariel Tenney, Sunnydale, Calif.; stepdaughter, Sarah Schaaff, of Seattle, Wash.; a large number of loving nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, David Sliney and wife, Sally Anne, of Tallahasee, Fla.; and his many friends and colleagues who will remember Bob's ever-present wit and good humor. He was preceded in death by a son, Sean R. Doherty, and ten brothers and sisters.
Bob ashes will be buried in his beloved town of Trout Lake, Wash. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
The family wishes to thank the UNC Hospital Emergency Room and Pulmonary Unit doctors, nurses and staff for their outstanding care. The Doherty family is being assisted by - Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
