Where Jobs Are (and Aren't) Growing

"What's more reassuring is if you dig a little bit deeper into reports by the [Bureau of Labor Statistics], you see that ... in Rust Belt cities in particular like Detroit, Kansas City, and others, the more recent drops were not driven by simply by a contraction in the labor force but rather were driven by actual declines in the number of people who were unemployed," says Matthew Freedman, assistant professor in economics at Cornell University.

In Certain Jobs, Supervisor Support Can Reduce Absenteeism

“An employee culture that approves of missing work might result in higher employee absenteeism when coupled with aversive work conditions if a supervisor is considered unsupportive, but it seems to have no effect at all when employees feel their supervisor is supportive,” said co-author Peter Bamberger, PhD, of Tel Aviv University and the Smithers Institute of Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. “This may be because employees want to reciprocate positive treatment and avoid causing any problems due to their absenteeism that could negatively impact their supervisors.”

TWU Westchester Bus Members Get 10% Hike But Take Health Hit

Ken Margolies
, professor at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations
, said it makes a big difference that strikes are legal for employees of private companies, since their unions aren’t bound by the Taylor Law.

“The theory of labor relations is that in collective bargaining, you need some kind of deadline because nobody wants to put their last position on the table until the end,” he said. “Both sides know that if there’s not an agreement, there’ll be a strike and neither side likes that, so you end up getting more settlements.”

Reince Priebus: "The Republicans have been in favor of this Keystone pipeline (that will create) twenty thousand jobs."

Supporters of the Keystone pipeline from the tar sands in Western Canada to the refineries in the Gulf Coast say the project would create 20,000 jobs, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. However, the U.S. State Department estimated it would create 5,000 - 6,000 jobs and some analysis say the number isn't that high, including a report by the Cornell University Global Labor Institute that found up to 1,400 temporary construction jobs would be created.

Rebellious unions upend German order

In the past couple of decades, industry-wide unions have splintered into smaller ones, often made up of more highly qualified employees. They say they have been neglected by the bigger unions.

“You now have certain groups in a strong negotiating position breaking off and demanding their own, much better deals,” says Lowell Turner, chairman of the international and comparative labor department at Cornell University. “That’s a threat for the German model of industrial relation and social partnership.”

Debt, the American Way

Who knew getting out of an unprecedented debt crisis was this easy? Print trillions of dollars for the banks, give Wall Street speculators zero-interest loans, and run up the national debt clock to $15 trillion.

Whip out your credit card, if you've still got one, and enjoy it while it lasts.

"We all know it's going to happen," says Louis Hyman. "Interest rates have to go up, and when they do—Kablooey!"

That is the precise technical term for where our debt-addicted economy is headed.

Mr. Hyman is a former McKinsey consultant, a Harvard Ph.D., a Cornell University professor and author of "Borrow: The American Way of Debt."

They’re mostly women who are the main earners in their households, she says, and “many of them are relying on public assistance.”
